Question: How long does it take the user to learn how to use zero-search-time documentation?

Answer: Less than five minutes. In the case of online documentation, all that a Windows-literate user has to learn is the Two Simple Rules for using the ZST index (this index is contained in the Search for Help on... dialog box). These Rules are:

(1) Look up the meanings of terms alphabetically as usual.

(2) Look up the instructions for a task by looking up the "thing" (object, noun) that the task is performed on. Under that "thing" you will find a list of all the tasks that can be performed on that "thing". Click the task and you get the instructions. It's that simple.
